A large building management company in New York City needed an immediate recovery due to a ransomware attack but the company IT personnel who set up their backups had been recently fired and failed to provide adequate instructions and credentials to facilitate access to backup systems.

A lost password almost took down the business.

The client was struck by a ransomware attack over a holiday weekend and desperately needed to access backup data for immediate recovery, but the backup files were locked behind a unique password and the IT manager who set it up was no longer at the company. They had been recently let go for poor performance.

A dire need for file recovery was an immediate pressure as business was at a standstill.

Agard tech support looked through all internal records and indicated that someone at the company deployed the backups and still controlled the keys to access them.

With dual verification of registered client admin and a series of recovery questions, Asgard support recovered admin access to the backup environment.

By losing access to their file server and their backups the company effectively lost access to crucial company data as well as viable paths to recover said data.

Failing to maintain a standard operating procedure (SOP) for when employees are no longer with the company, they did not know to check for password protections on programs such as a backup system. Ie. They were locked out of their backups.

With the employee who maintained the backup passwords no longer working for the company and no “standard” password they had no way of knowing where to begin.

Working diligently Asgard employees began cycling through several typical basic password combinations.

Without access to the base machine or backups, both sides were working against the clock to correct the issue.

Working well into the night Asgard tech support was able to crack the mystery password in relatively short order.

Solution

A well-documented disaster recovery plan covered all data recovery objectives and authorized user access. This included documenting procedures for employee termination and a password policy for “general use” to avoid similar future instances.

Worked with company with known passwords for variation testing.

Performed after hours password testing on various “standard” passwords.

Once cracked, Asgard handed the password to the client and documented it for future use.

A disaster recovery plan was implemented that included employees' authorizations and passwords.

Standard recovery efforts testing was scheduled regularly to ensure business continuity.
